2023 committees

Color Guard

Stephen McKee

The Color Guard makes regular appearances at State and local historical events throughout the year. We are always recruiting new members to our Color Guard. It’s a fun, rewarding and exciting way to express your Patriotism while honoring American history.

Eagle Scouts

Each year the Mecklenburg Chapter honors outstanding Eagle Scouts with the SAR Eagle Scout Certificate. Plus, our chapter presents the annual Eagle Scout Scholarship Award every February to a deserved Eagle Scout.

Chapter Meetings/Socials

Russ McCullough

The chapter meeting committee is responsible for securing all of our meeting speakers and planning the programs, including our annual President’s Day Community Dinner held each February.

Membership

Greg Catledge

The membership committee works closely with all of our Chapter officers to maintain the high level of growth and interest in the SAR here in Mecklenburg County. Our Chapter will grow over the next few years to more than 200 members.

JROTC Medals & Scholarship

The JROTC committee honors outstanding local JROTC members each year. This committee actively solicits JROTC students to participate.

Community Service Awards

Steve McKee

Each year our chapter works with and recognizes outstanding community service officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Department, the Charlotte Fire Department and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Rumbaugh Oratory Youth Contest

 Russ McCullough

Each year our chapter solicits entries from high school students in grades 9-12 to write and deliver an oral presentation about topics and people from the Revolutionary War Era. We select an outstanding student and award a $250 local scholarship. That student is then eligible to participate in the State contest. Learn more about the Rumbaugh program.

Americanism Poster Youth Contest

 Jim Wood

Each year our chapter solicits entries from area elementary school students in grades 3-5 to design a poster based on selected topics and people from the Revolutionary War Era. We select an outstanding poster and award a $250 local scholarship divided between the student and his/her sponsoring teacher. Learn more about the Americanism Poster program.

Knight Essay Youth Contest

Jim Tauber

Each year our chapter solicits entries from area high school students in grades 9-12 to write an essay on a specific topic about events or people from the Revolutionary War Era. We select an outstanding student and award a $250 local scholarship. That student is then eligible to participate in the State contest. Learn more about the Knight Essay program.

American History Teacher Award

 Jim Wood

Each year our chapter solicits entries from all public and private history teachers who teach programs about the Revolutionary War. The teach submits an essay on a specific topic and then a winning essay is selected and the teach wins a $150 award. Learn more about the American History Teacher program.
